Accepting the notion that ADHD is an inherited trait, consider the types of people who would risk life and limb for a journey across the Atlantic in the seventeenth century — they’d have to be either desperate Farmers or normal Hunters. Thom Hartmann’s Adult ADHD is a classic. This book is inspiring, validating, and an extremely practical guide for the entrepreneur with a ‘hunter’s’ mind. Adult ADHD continues to make an important and unique contribution to the field and to adults with ADHD who long to lead a meaningful and satisfying life.” - Sari Solden MS, MFCC, author, Women With ADHD A clear and positive view of our remarkable children with practical tips for the parent. Stephen C. Davidson And so, more than twenty years after the first publication of this book, we are left with the ongoing questions: What is ADHD, where did it come from, why do we have it, and where do we go from here? In the spring of 1980, I sat in the living room of the apartment of Dr. Ben Feingold, overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, listening to him describe his search for a solution to the problem of hyperactivity. At the time, I was executive director of a residential treatment facility for abused and abandoned children, and most of the children referred to us had been diagnosed with hyperactivity or minimal brain damage (or MBD, a term later softened to minimal brain dysfunction). I was acutely interested in what Dr. Feingold had to say. Part Two of Hartmann’s book is “Living and Thriving in the Farmer’s World.” There are a number of ways for the Hunter to succeed and the book offers many examples. In a positive sense the Hunter is voraciously curious and creative with a broad-base of interests. There are many jobs that require these traits. To fit into the Farmer’s world the Hunter needs to break down a task into smaller tasks to compensate for their short concentration span. The Hunter can also learn various forms of meditation to increase their attention span and needs to create a “distraction-free zone.” This would include removing a radio and other distracting technology from his or her environment. Exercising daily can take the place of Ritalin. Knowing well what you are good at and limit your tasks to those things can lead to success. If the task requires a Farmer find a Farmer to do it. Two characteristics of the Hunter are a serious challenge: impulsivity and craving. Impulsivity can be overcome by partnering with a Farmer and postponing all decision for a day. As for craving wait for an hour or two for the craving to pass or redirect it, attaching the craving to something else.Robert Wright’s book The Moral Animal carries the model a step further, dealing with the subject of “Darwinian psychology,” and pointing out in dramatic detail how behaviors ranging from depression to aggression to infidelity were adaptive and useful in the very recent history of the human race. For a book about people that focus on one thing extremely intently, or are very easily distracted, the blatant product placement is distracting to say the least. I gave it the pass the first time, thinking the author really believed in a product. But then it's mentioned again a few chapters later. It was at that point I lost all interest in finishing the book, and only did so out of spite and the need to achieve my reading goal for the year. Every chapter all I could think was "will it be mentioned again?" and could in no way really sink myself in to the arguments being made to me. ADHD: A Hunter in a Farmer’s World, 3rd Edition: A Hunter in a Farmer's World Thom Hartmann,Michael Popkin - foreword,Robin Douglas,Inner Traditions Audio vk The first half was actually very good. It was well laid out and interesting with some ideas and thinking I’d not come across before. I Disregarding that traits are labelled ‘hunter’ or ‘farmer’ it was interesting to hear more about how they developed and why they might be under utilised in a modern office environment. I identified strongly with certain characteristics from both archetypes, which I don’t think is surprising or unusual.

Review – ADHD: A Hunter in a Farmer’s World by Thom Hartmann, Rochester, VT: Healing Arts Press, 2019. Hyperactivity involves restless or excessive (hyper) activity. Hyperactive children are often described as being on fire, as if they have ants in their pants. Feingold noted these descriptions and observed that they were probably having the normal reaction to an allergy—an itch—in the brain. To go through a list parallel to those of a Hunter (see my last article), we find that a good Farmer: Last night I watched a PBS program on grasslands that detailed how certain species affect ecosystems. Restoration of ecosystems required reintroduction of key species that created a chain of processes that facilitated biodiversity while inhibiting dominating species (often non-native) from over-consumption and eco-destruction. The tragic irony that modern science was only now beginning to comprehend what indigenous wisdom had long known was inescapable. More recent research, however, has demonstrated a high incidence of ADHD among the parents of ADHD children. This discovery caused some psychologists to initially postulate that ADHD was the result of growing up in a dysfunctional family; they suggested that ADHD may follow the same pattern as child or spousal abuse. The dietary-cause advocates contended that children pattern their parent’s eating habits, and this accounts for the generational patterns of ADHD. Other studies suggest that, like Down’s Syndrome or muscular dystrophy, ADHD is a genetic disease, with the A1 variant of the D2 dopamine receptor gene identified by scientists as the leading candidate.

Isn’t easily distracted by his or her environment. It may take three or four weeks to plant all the seed or rice shoots necessary for a complete crop, and the window of good weather may be limited. If a Farmer were to get distracted while planting and wander off to investigate a noise in the forest, or spend days trying to figure out why one plant was slightly larger than another or satisfy some other curiosity, the crop wouldn’t get planted — and he or she would starve. This book helped me better understand ADHD and gave me practical strategies on how to deal with these children in the classroom. Anne Bennett Farmers sustain a slow-and-steady effort for hours every day, days every week, weeks every month. While it could be argued that there are bursts of energy needed during harvest time, most Hunters would say that such bursts are nothing compared to chasing a deer fifteen miles through a forest. And the Farmer’s “bursts” need to last all day, often for days or weeks at a time. Even in high gear, a Farmer’s efforts would be characterized as fast-and-steady. They’ll face danger that “normal” individuals would avoid. A wounded boar, or elephant, or bear, can kill you—and many a Hunter has been killed by his would-be prey. If you extend this analogy to warfare, where the Hunters are often the front line infantry or the most aggressive officers, the same is true. Hunters take risks. But there was an odd side effect to these skin-disease cures: the children’s behavior also changed. Many of Dr. Feingold’s young patients, in addition to being victims of skin diseases, had been diagnosed with hyperactivity or minimal brain dysfunction. But when the skin-disease-causing foods or food additives were removed from their diets, the hyperactivity quite often disappeared, or was reduced so dramatically that parents and teachers noticed the change.
